social media internship

If you are looking to land a social media internship we can help you with these few tips!

Keep Personal Channels Clean and Updated

This is a key point in landing an internship in social media. Employers will want to see that you not only have updated and engaging content, but that it is appropriate as well. If your accounts are private for this reason, you might want to think about going through and cleaning them up so that you can make them public. Having private social media accounts might give employers a negative first impression. By keeping your social media public, employers will be able to get a sense of your personality and your posting style.

Brand Yourself

With each of your personal social channels, make sure there is a continuous thread that binds them all together. Come up with one word or phrase that describes you and your social media content and make sure that your content falls underneath that one word. This ensures that your social media channels are cohesive and you can start to create a recognizable theme among your content.

Do Your Research

Once you’ve secured your interview, the next step is to do your research. Not only on the company itself, but (if possible), on the person(s) who will be conducting your interview. Employers expect that you have some background knowledge of their company when going into an interview, so it’s important to show up prepared. If during your research you find yourself with questions, jot them down and ask them during your interview! Come with at least 3 questions, as it’s always a great thing to engage with your interviewer by asking questions.

Keep a List of Go-To Brands

Going into an interview knowing your own favorite brands is a great way to show that you know what’s going on in the world of social media. Things to research about your favorite brands include basic information on the brand/company, if they’re running any social media campaigns, what kind of content they’re posting, why that content is working in engaging consumers, and what area(s) they could possibly improve on. Analyze your favorite brands from start to finish, as employers will want to know you can pick out this information and build suggestions upon it.

Follow-Up For your Social Media Internship

Be relentless! It might seem like you’re “bugging” the company, but most employers will be thrilled to see that you have a passion for them. This follow-up can come in the form of an e-mail, phone call, or even a handwritten letter. Don’t leave out this simple task, it can go a long way in showing your interest in the company!

And remember…your homework doesn’t end once you’ve landed the internship. Check out Business Insider for what to do on your first day, or read about Taylor’s Social Media Internship experience with Regan NYC!
