No longer do we live in a world where a publicist’s main priority is to get his or her client a mention in the newspaper or quoted in a magazine. Today, clients expect digital media coverage, social media presence, and even video creation. The tasks of a publicist broaden everyday with ever evolving ways to communicate.
The good thing about having such a reliance on online media is the ability for a publicist to immediately alert consumers about a new product, event, or news announcement. Almost every newspaper or magazine offers its readers an online event calendar. A few years ago, you would have to submit event happenings to print publications months in advance to even have consideration of being published. In today’s online dependent world, we can post those same events to online event calendars as soon as we have details from the client.
A great example of a user-friendly online event calendar would be Patch.com. Patch is a hyper local online newspaper that reports on almost anything and everything of a town’s goings-on. Users rely heavily on this site to get caught up on current happenings. For Regan Communications in Rhode Island, we post all of Mohegan Sun’s new concert information as soon as we are alerted.
Posting these events to Patch, as well as other local online event calendars, provides immediate media coverage and access for the consumer. While we still submit these concerts to traditional media outlets, we no longer rely strictly on those publications to publish our information. We now have the ability to publish what we want, how we want it, and when it makes the most sense.
