October is one of my favorite times of year—the month that kicks off the overflow of fall activities (with the Instagram photos to prove it), beautiful views of foliage and the return of cozy sweaters.
But as we all know, in the midst of the beautiful fall colors of New England, each October also comes with an abundance of pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Some prepare for this month all year to spread awareness and generate funds for the disease that most everyone has been touched by. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, hit close to home for me as my best friend’s mom, Barbara was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, better known as stage IV, in February after being in remission for 13 years.
There is no doubt that breast cancer is one of the most funded diseases in the world. The good news is that today you hear about millions of people beating breast cancer due to the high percentage of dollars that go towards research and successful treatments for stages I-III. After one beats cancer, there are multiple options available to help prevent the chance of the cancer reoccurring, but there is no guarantee that it won’t come back. The bad news—only 5-7% of funds raised for breast cancer go to stage IV research. Metavivor is the only one non-profit, all-volunteer organization in the U.S. that exclusively raises funds for MBC research, generates awareness and advocates for people with stage IV. Barbara is determined to raise awareness for metastatic breast cancer and this organization. She inspires us every day! Shout out to WCVB and Barbara’s loved ones who are helping make that happen.
