As a Communications Major about to enter my junior year at Boston College, I was yet to have real-world exposure to the public relations field. When I secured a summer internship at Regan Communications in Providence, I was looking forward to applying my knowledge to professional “real-world” experiences.
Transition into the office was easy with the welcoming team located here in Providence! Many students in college talk about internships where all they do all day is run to get coffee, stand at the copy machine, or stare at a computer. It was refreshing to find that this is not the case at Regan.
My first day on the job, I was already posting events to Rhode Island Patch websites, Turnto10, and other RI event calendars. I immediately learned how to make clippings, a simple task but very important to the clients in PR.
I have also assisted in media follow-ups, photo-ops and creating social media postings. I’ve made phone calls to help recruit charities around Rhode Island to participate in this year’s Dunkin’ Dugout, an initiative led by Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees of Rhode Island and Bristol County, MA to provide free tickets to PawSox games. I’ve even joined the office on excursions. On National Donut Day I went with team members to radio stations around Rhode Island for a “donut drop” to promote new offerings from Dunkin’ Donuts! Last week I was lucky enough to accompany another team member on a trip to Gillette Stadium where Patriots players Jerod Mayo and Vince Wilfork got to ride in Monster Jam trucks, in order to create more media attention for the event.
Even only being here for a month, all the pieces I’ve learned in classes over the past two years of college are beginning to fit together as I apply my knowledge to projects here at Regan. I’m lucky to be a part of this team and look forward to what the rest of the summer holds!
