Finding your ideal social media audience doesn’t have to be as daunting as it sounds. If you’re not ready to work with a social media expert or team just yet, there are a few ways you can begin the process on your own. Here are three of our favorites:

  1. Utilize simple (and free!) analytics. Don’t let the term ‘analytics’ scare you away. Instead, embrace it! If you’re just starting out, take advantage of the free tools that are accessible to you.

For example, have you transitioned your Instagram account to a business account? It takes less than 5 minutes and can prove quite helpful. First, it gives your followers an easy way to contact you thanks to the ‘contact’ button right at the top of your profile. Second, you’ll also have access to some top-level analytics. Click on ‘Followers’ and you’ll be able to see the gender, age range, and top locations breakdown, as well as what days/hours your followers are active.

Use this insight to post when your audience is online (keep in mind that others are doing the same, so you might be posting at a much more active time), and share content relevant to your users’ top locations and other demographics.

  2. Create a survey. This might sound old schools, but it works. If you want to know more about your audience, why not just ask them? It might surprise you. For example, I created a survey for my personal blog, By Gabriella, and learned so much about my audience. I found out what content they enjoy the most, what they’d like to see more of, and a little bit about them, as well. If you’re looking for your ideal social media audience, find out who’s already engaging with you by asking them directly.

  3. Craft content based on your results. After you’ve taken advantage of those free analytics and created a survey for your existing audience, act on your results! Create content that both fits within your brand and resonates with your audience. Share on the social media channels where they’re most active and engage with your followers when they engage with you. Use your posts and content to create a conversation; don’t assume the conversation ends after you hit publish.
