What happens when you get into the office on a Monday morning and you find out that Matt Lauer is stopping down the block in a matter of hours? I guess most people wouldn’t care, but as Agency of Record for The City of New London, CT Coast Guard Summer, The National Coast Guard Museum Association and The CT Maritime Heritage Festival you kick it into gear post haste.
We knew Matt Lauer was biking from Providence to the Ferry Terminal in New London as part of his Red Nose Day tour, but when? Media relations quickly tracked down the NBC crew who gave us play by play location so we knew exactly when he would be rolling into town. In fact, he was supposed to be traveling at 10 mph – but always the overachiever he was tracking at 20mph and arrived nearly 3 hours early.
Never fear – the Q&H team made sure the Mayor, key city dignitaries and business owners were on hand to welcome the crew – all chanting “Let’s Go Matt!” We were even able to grab 50 t-shirts and a banner from the National Coast Guard Museum Association to help make an impact. Thank goodness our summer intern started that morning!
All the while we were updating social media accounts and making the most of the appearance. The team even got the chance to invite him back for the opening of the National Coast Guard Museum in 2018 (though we think we might need a little follow up to make that one happen!)
As we always say, there’s never a dull moment in PR, which is why we do what we do. Who knows what tomorrow may bring.
