I love holidays!  And not just for the copious amounts of food or the (occasional) day off work.  I love them because more often than not, I can parlay them into some sort of media coverage for at least one of my clients.  Let’s face it, most news organizations know that they HAVE to do some sort of light “feature” story when faced with St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, July 4th, or Derby Day…yes, even Derby Day.  When it comes to holidays, if you think beyond the traditional, you can use your creative genius to pitch some fun stories and impress your client at the same time.

I’m super fortunate to work with The Animal Rescue League, so Easter provides a great opportunity to get some much-needed PR for the rabbits in the house.  These guys are generally overshadowed by cute puppies in the kennels next door, so with Easter being their one big day, we try to take advantage of it!  Take a look at the coverage from The Cape Cod Times just a few weeks ago for a little thumper looking for a new home (she got one!).

With the Kentucky Derby coming up, I’ve got mint julips on the mind!  And so will food journalists and bloggers.  I’ve teed up a story to run in the local paper next week featuring a gourmet/wine shop that carries a large assortment of bourbon.  The client will be chatting with the reporter this week about cool drink recipes for Derby Day and all things bourbon.  He’s certainly not the only store selling bourbon in the area, but hey, we did a little legwork and earned the publicity.

When it comes to holidays, there’s no shortage.  Earth Day just passed – do you have a green angle to promote?  Memorial Day and the start of grilling season are on the horizon – have any cool BBQ recipes or grilling tips to share?  And as you probably know, there’s a “day” for just about everything now – just check out this website for some inspiration –  holidayinsights.com.

Happy Holidays!
