There are three major components to going for a run: the warm up, the run itself, and the cool down; shooting a video isn’t much different. Team Creative got the chance to work and run with Thomas Grilk, the Executive Director of the Boston Athletic Association, to create a video highlighting his leadership throughout the tragedy and triumph of the Boston Marathon.
Our warm up involved shelling out the idea for the video itself. What sort of story could we tell in a mere ninety seconds, and how could we do it? As the Executive Director of the BAA and an avid runner himself, what better way to symbolize the leadership Grilk conveyed and continuous perseverance of the city of Boston than running onward throughout the city. Once our warm up was finished and the idea was set, we were ready to head out on our run.
The shoot, or in this case our run, was where we really broke a sweat. Shooting this video took us all across the city of Boston. We started running alongside Grilk on the Charles River and through the Back Bay neighborhood. Grilk epitomized being a “good sport,” eager to run across the Harvard Bridge and up and down Marlborough Street as many times as necessary until we got the best footage. The following day we ran on our own throughout Boston to capture the city’s true beauty and essence. The day was spent venturing into the unknown, aka East Boston, and literally throwing ourselves out of cars to capture that perfect shot.
The cool down should be the relaxing part of a run but in our case was the most fast paced. Post production duties called for editing video, curating audio clips from real news stories and speeches, and finding the best music to put it all to. The end result was a great workout for Team Creative and an inspiring video that was used as an introduction to a speech Grilk delivered at the Taj Hotel in Boston on June 25.
