Making a Great First Impression When Coming In For An Interview

We’ve all heard the phrase “never judge a book by its cover.” We also know that realistically, we live in a world where the “cover” can often make the difference—especially if there are many books to choose from.

So how do you get someone to open the cover to read the compelling story? Well, enough of the analogies: here at Regan Communications Group, we realize that we are professionals in a fast-paced and competitive industry—so much, in fact, that first impressions can (and usually do) make all the difference.

Research has shown that within the first couple of minutes of meeting someone, one is able to determine the future of that relationship (if one at all).  With my role as receptionist at Regan, I hold every first impression as someone enters the building.  While I may not know who could walk through the door at any given time, I am always sure to create an initial warm, friendly, and professional environment.

As RCG employees, we pride ourselves in representing our brand and what we stand for; every day we come to work ready to represent not only ourselves but also the company as a whole. When it comes to making that great first impression, all factors contribute to establishing a potential longstanding relationship in order to show what we as professionals can really do.

Here are some helpful tips on how to make a good first impression:

Smile, smile, smile! A smile is worth a thousand words, and it’s only a cliché because it’s true. You can never go wrong with a bubbly and confident smile. Be sure to support it with welcoming body language and great posture.

Always dress to impress. In addition to your facial expression, your attire is what they will notice next—so make sure you are dressed appropriately and professional. This includes grooming!

Have a good attitude. Make them feel welcome and comfortable at all times. Being attentive, knowledgeable, and accommodating will help make the best first impression!

Be genuine. Most importantly, be yourself. Don’t try to be someone you’re not.

Always remember that first impressions lead to a second opportunity to show who you are and what you can do as a person and a professional. No one ever gets a second chance at making a good first impression, so make sure it’s a good one!
